The enormous Kauri tree dates back to a time before our calender. Due to deforestation, almost every Kauri tree is gone. Along the way to the Bay of Islands, you might still be able to spot a great amount of these forest giants. History was written in the Bay of Islands and in the Treaty House of Waitangi, you can see the genesis of het modern New Zealand.
