1 Day

Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico and full of exciting attractions and events, from the historic Old Town, where the Villa of Albuquerque was founded in 1706, to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the most popular ballooning event in the world. Albuquerque is located in the far north of the Chihuahua Desert on the Rio Grande River. At 1,600 feet, it is one of the highest-lying cities in the United States.

Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as Ranchos de Alburquerque, a Spanish colonial outpost on the Camino Real, the ancient trade route between Santa Fe (New Mexico) and Mexico City. The village was named after the Spanish town of Alburquerque. It was built as a traditional Spanish village, around a central plaza with a church and surrounded by government buildings. That plaza has been preserved, as has the 1793 San Felipe de Neri Church, and now forms the center of Old Town, the Old City. The center of New Town lies further south.

The historic Route 66 highway from Chicago to Los Angeles ran through downtown Albuquerque. Now tourists visit Central Avenue decorated with "Route 66" flags to try to recapture the atmosphere of the old road with its motels and stores.

Unique to this area are the Pinyon Pines, which produce an edible nut considered a gourmet delicacy in the west. Continue eastward to the panhandle of Texas and hopefully you'll get a glimpse of the Texas blue sky or a towering thundercloud, both prevalent features of this flat plain. Amarillo was once a railhead town for cattle shipments to the north. The cattle industry remains an important element of the city's economy. Amarillo is well known for its Cadillac graveyard.
