Your rental car will be brought to your hotel this morning and you can start your expedition to discover this wonderful island. 150 years ago, New Zealand was covered in primeval forests. The enormous Kauri tree dates back to a time before our calender. Due to deforestation, almost every Kauri tree is gone. Along the way to the Bay of Islands, you might still be able to spot a great amount of these forest giants. History was written in the Bay of Islands and in the Treaty House of Waitangi, you can see the genesis of het modern New Zealand.

After visiting the caves of Waiomo, right before entering Auckland, you turn to the right in the direction to the westcoast to discover this green area. A lot of movies were filmed here. The spectacular coast and the wild vegetation are very accessible. The colony of Gannets can be seen from very closeby.

After breakfast, you leave Auckland for Coromandel. This peninsula is a green oasis and in the summer months, the perfect vacation spot for an Aucklander. If you leave on time, you can visit a fairly big part of the peninsula and we recommend not to miss the east coast.

Passing New Zealands fastest growing city, Tauranga at the wonderful Pacific Ocean, via Tirau to the biggest inner lake of the country: Lake Taupo. It will be the first time to see the volcanic powers of the area. Steam and boiling mud can be found in the free Craters of the Moon, near the sparkling blue Huka Falls. Tomorrow, there is the possibiliy to hike the most beautiful trail of the northern island. The Tongariro Crossing is a steep hike along three volcanos. A trip to Rotorua is an option too: this city of suphur and the center of the Maori Culture.

This morning, you can visit Rotorua, on the road to the next destination: Gisborne. Along the way, at the coast of Bay of Plenty, you will see a smoking island: White Island. Depanding on the weather conditions, a boat travels frequently to the island. With a helmet and gas mask, you can make wonderful walks. Gisborne is the city where the first sunlight of the new day can be seen. Before the English domination, the city was historical due to Capitain Cook. He berthed here and there is still a statue to mark the spot.

Beautiful beaches and hot water sources separate you from a city with a mediterranean feel: Napier. You drive over Highway 2, along the towns of Mahia and Wairoa to Napier, the Mekka of the Art Déco. After the earthquake of 1931, the city was destroyed and rebuild in the style of the era.
